Everything you need to know about the AMC exam pathway
AMC MCQ (CAT) costs $2,920 AUD. Clinical exam costs $3,000 AUD (from July 2025). Total assessment pathway: approximately $6,000-7,000 AUD including portfolio and verification fees, plus AHPRA annual registration fees (~$1,027). Our preparation course is separate from official exam fees.
Pass rates vary by sitting. The AMC MCQ pass rate is approximately 50% overall. The Clinical exam has a lower pass rate of around 21%. Thorough preparation is essential - the clinical exam in particular requires dedicated practice with OSCE-style stations.
You cannot practice as a registered doctor until you pass both exams and receive AHPRA registration. However, you may work in other healthcare roles or supervised positions under specific registration categories while preparing.
The complete process typically takes 12-24 months, including document verification (EPIC/ECFMG), exam preparation, passing both MCQ and Clinical exams, and final AHPRA registration. Starting preparation early is key to success.
You must hold a primary medical qualification from a recognized institution, have completed at least 12 months of supervised clinical practice, and meet English language requirements (IELTS Academic 7.0 in each band, OET B in each component, or PTE Academic 65 in each section).
